breathwork
'Breathwork'
drawing and sound
curated by Lucy Sabin at Museum of Modern Art, Oxford and online throughout August 2020.
spiro : spiritum
breathe : breath
inhale : exhale
I make a whistling sound, as I exhale, it drops like a sounding line into the air surrounding me, a drawing of negative space, marking new territories.
At the start of the sound are my lips. They create a fragile threshold between within and without. But the sound, the breath, the spiro, traces backwards inside as it travels beyond. Through sinews to the small, smaller, smallest circles, curves and arches deep within the chamber of my ribcage.
Where miracles occur and life is made. Transferred. And sometimes lost.
From this place, my breath echoes outwards like ripples under the surface of my skin.
At times it is percussive, broken, sonorous, black.
Once I could not breathe. Muffled. Stifled. Too many tears. But that time has passed. Somewhere in the archive of my body the memory of this time is buried.
But now I try to allow my breath to unfold.
